Quality colt Flying Artie scored a very smart first up win. Having his first run since his third in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill in March, he settled in second place, after a quick beginning. He moved up to the leader (Dalradian) nearing the home turn, took the lead at the 200m and despite briefly racing a bit greenly, he soon drew way to score comfortably. Dalradian showed good pace to lead from his wide barrier (10), fought back really well when challenged in the straight and then held on well for a very good second. Derryn got back from his good barrier (2) to settle in seventh place on the rails. He switched deep on straightening and then kept running on well to take third. Ken’s Dream settled in third place, improved (three deep) approaching the home turn and then fought on quite well for fourth. Manolo Blahniq was well back in the 12-horse field, went widest of all at the home turn and caught the eye in running on late for fifth.
