New Zealand mare Bonneval ran a great trial for the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and took her record to seven wins from ten starts in winning here, her third Group One success. She settled well for Hugh Bowman back in fifth place, one off the rails, tracking a solid tempo. She was under riding nearing 600m, responded and moved up on straightening, hit the front at the 50m and then went on to score comfortably in a strong staying effort. After being caught deep in the early stages the favourite Hartnell was eased to settled back in second last place in the eight-horse field. He improved (wide) rounding the home turn and kept running on well for a good second. Gailo Chop was quickly away and after leading early on, settled in third place on the rails. He moved up on turning for home and kept fighting on well for a very good third. Single Gaze settled outside the leader (Samovare) and after travelling at a solid tempo, she got to the front at the 200m and then held on really well for (1.9 lengths) fourth after running a bold race. Black Heart Bart was caught deep in the early stages before getting in to be fourth (one off the rails). He was under riding at the home turn and then battled on for (2 lengths) fifth after not having the easiest of trips.
