Tony McEvoy-trained three-year-old Crockett was a surprise winner at $21, his second win in eight starts to date, but it was a good effort, nevertheless. He was eased from his wide barrier (9), settled in second last place in the 11-horse field before commencing his run (widest of all) on straightening. He then came with a strong late bid (wide out), perhaps in better going, to win going away by just under a length. Greg Eurell-trained O'Tauto, a promising winner at his only start in a 2yo maiden (1200m) at Cranbourne on July 26, also settled towards the tail of the field before tracking up (with cover) rounding the home turn. He then put in a good run, challenged at the 100m and fought well for a good second. The well-supported, Lindsay Park-trained Muswellbrook raced in eighth place, between runners, eased into clear running at the 300m, challenged at the 100m and battled on well for a good third.
