New Zealand filly Provocative proved by far to be the superior stayer. She settled in last place in the 18-horse field from her wide barrier (16), before commencing a wide move from the 800m. She swept around the field (widest of all) from the 600m, challenged on straightening, took the lead at the 200m and then drew away to win comfortably in a strong staying effort. Ambience also went back from a wide barrier (17), settled in second last place before getting between runners from the 600m. She challenged on turning for home and kept fighting gamely for a good second, although having no chance with the winner over the latter stages. Falkenberg travelled well in seventh place, wide with cover. She made a quick move passing the 600m and took the lead rounding the home turn. She then fought on well in the straight to take third placing, narrowly behind the runner-up. The favourite Imposing Lass was seventh on the rails, got along the inner nearing the home turn and was handy enough on straightening. But she just battled on over the latter stages for sixth, looking tested by the 2400m trip.
