Eagle Way was ridden patiently by Tommy Berry and settled back in 13th place in the 18-horse field before improving well (wide with cover) at the 700m. He got to fourth (wide out) rounding the home turn, rallied strongly to take the lead at the 200m and then battled well for a very good win, running the 2400m out fully in a strong staying effort. Rodrico raced in eighth place, wide with cover, before moving up to challenge coming to the 200m. He then fought well to take second, having no chance with the winner over the latter stages. I’m Belucci settled near last in the large field. He commenced a very wide move from the 700m, got to third at the 200m and briefly looked dangerous before holding on for a good third. Favourite Howard Be Thy Name settled back in 14th place, started a wide move at the 600m and got to fifth (wide out) at the 200m before battling on for (4.9 lengths) fourth.
