The last two Melbourne Cup winners turned up to rekindle past glories but were trumped by a former English horse now owned by Lloyd Williams. Green Moon had shown his staying credentials the year before winning an amazing Newcastle Cup and then second in the Caulfield Cup. After a Blamey win in a once off Autumn start, he came back to win the Turnbull then start fav in the Cox Plate. After a failure there he was 20-1 at Flemington. Unlike other years where the speed was hot, it really was a bit of a walk early. Green Moon sat in the first half dozen and used the fact he liked the firm track when other rivals didn’t. He tracked the stablemate through, second Fiorente followed him and third Jakkalberry him. Turn of foot was the key and it gave Lloyd Williams his fourth win as an owner. In the end it was the previous two Newcastle Cup winners who ran the crackers. Many of the internationals in the race simply did not like the good track.
