One of the outsiders in the seven-horse field Tavarnelle was a surprise winner. She raced outside the leader (Sheila’s Star) in a moderate early pace (first 800m - 48.97) and subsequently had a great struggle with the pacemaker in the straight, grabbing a short head win at the post. Sheila’s Star led and fought back well, failing narrowly at the post for second. Koonoomoo was sixth one off the rails to the home turn before fanning wide at the 400m and running on well for a close third, being unsuited by the sprint-home tactics of the race. Jolie Blonde was one out and one back to the turn. She kept fighting on in the straight for a close fourth after seeming to have every chance. The $2.90 favourite There’s Only One was last to the turn and made ground without threatening to finish sixth, beaten only a length and half after being unsuited by the slow early pace. *ANZ
