The Jim Conlan-trained Ferlax continued a meteoric rise going from an Echuca Maiden three starts back, with two more country wins in between, to remain unbeaten and take out this Group One at Flemington. The Pentire colt was quickly away and eased to get a great trip third on the rails. He got inside the leader Ajeeb to take the lead at the 200m and fought on gamely to win by half length. The filly You’re So Good settled midfield and three wide with cover before switching out wide making the home turn. She was still four lengths from the leader at the 300m but finished very well to get within a neck of the winner at the post, being unsuited by the sprint home tactics of the leader (first 1000m – 1:01.18 first 1000m / last 600m - 33.91). Sheer Talent raced outside the leader and took the lead briefly at the 300m before battling on for third, beaten a length at the post. Hvasstan was last to the 600m, went wide at the turn and made up many lengths running on strongly for a very good fourth, being disadvantaged by the slow early pace. Bass Strait was about tenth on the rails to the 600m and made good ground in the sprint home for a good fifth while Philippi came from second last on the rails at the turn for a late-closing sixth. Albrecht began well but was shuffled back to midfield wide with cover, however he failed to run on and finished a disappointing tenth. *ANZ
