The Sydney-trained colt Charlie Boy scored a surprise first-up win. He travelled well just behind the leading bunch on the rails side, following a moderate early pace (first 600m35.95). He switched to the rails passing the 400m, hit the lead at the 100m and drew clear to win nicely by three quarters of a length. It was a good effort. Kiss A Rose was ridden patiently in the centre of the course, tracking nicely behind the leading division. She was switched into the clear nearing the 400m and then continued to finish well to just grab second at the post. It was a very nice run. The SA-trained Éclair Big Bang ran along well in the centre of the course, close to the leaders. He put in a strong run to challenge at the 300m and continued to fight gamely to the post for a very good third. The favourite Safeguard shared the lead in the centre of the track to the 100m point before tiring slightly from that point for fourth, beaten one length. The smart filly Gregers was held up for a late run, racing behind the leaders in the centre of the course until passing the 400m. She put in a good run to challenge at the 250m and then battled on quite well for (length and quarter) fifth after having every chance. *ANZ
