Lankan Rupee began smartly and travelled well outside the leader (Snitzerland) in the centre of the track. He challenged that mare strongly at the 200m and after quite a fierce battle he prevailed by the barest of margins. Snitzerland showed all her renowned pace and led the field most of the way. She stuck on grimly when challenged and was only beaten in the last few strides for a very game second. Nicholls Court was sixth to the 400m, went to third at the 200m and fought well to hold that position at the post. Delago Bolt was last in the 14-horse field to the 600m and was an eye-catching, late-closing fourth. Planet Voyage held on for fifth while the favourite Safeguard ($3.50) was tenth to the 400m, got into the clear at the 300m and kept battling on for fifth. *ANZ
