Precedence, who narrowly missed out on a start in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) gained some compensation with his win here. Nicely ridden by Craig Williams, he settled on a good spot, going forward from the barrier then settling fourth one out and one back. He moved up well three wide rounding the home turn, came with a well-timed run to challenge at the 300m, then under hands and heels riding was coaxed to narrow but good win. He then survived a protest from the runner-up, who claimed some interference in the latter stages. Sertorius enjoyed a great trip, third on the rails before taking an inside run to take the lead at the 400m. He then kept fighting gamely all the way down the straight to miss victory by the shortest of margins. Let’s Make Adeal raced in about eighth place, one off the rails, before improving (wide) rounding the home turn. She continued to run on quite well in the straight for third beaten just over two lengths. Forgotten Voice raced outside the leader (Mourinho) most of the way to the turn, challenged at the 400m and then battled on fairly well for fourth. *ANZ
