The Peter Moody-trained four-year-old Flamberge raced away for a decisive win. He began well and travelled well outside the leader, Decircles, following a moderate early tempo (first 600m 36.11) before challenging at the 300m. He took the lead passing the 200m and then drew clear to score comfortably by just over two lengths. The favourite Essay Raider ($4.50) settled in a good spot, just behind the leaders in fourth place. He was urged to him prove at the 300m as the pace quickened, went to third at the 200m and continued to battle on nicely for second, beaten two and quarter lengths. Decircles led the field to the 200m and then held on quite well to take the minor placing, beaten three lengths. Sol say was seventh to the 600m, and made ground in the sprint home for a four and three quarter lengths fourth.
