Dissident began well and raced back in second place before moving up outside the leader (Messene) in the mid-stages, travelling at a steady tempo (62.49 first 1000m). He got the better of that runner and took the lead at the 300m but he then had to dig deep to hold on for a narrow but good win, sprinting home his final 600m in a smart 33.79. The Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Fawkner was back in fourth place, one off the rails. He improved to third rounding the home turn, challenged at the 300m and fought on particularly well for a close second, sprinting home his last 600m in a quick 33.53 in a smart first-up performance. Puissance De Lune travelled well in sixth place on the rails, switched out nearing the turn, getting into clear running at the 300m and he then ran on very well for a good third, coming home his last 600m in 33.41. Spillway was second last in the ten-horse field to the 600m. He switched deep at the 300m and then made good ground in the sprint home to finish (1.7 lengths) fourth. Boban was seventh on the rails, got through between runners at the turn going to fourth at the 300m and then kept battling on to finish (2.7 lengths) fifth. Green Moon was last to the 600m, he stuck to the rails at the turn and kept running on quite well in the straight for a sound first-up sixth, beaten three lengths.
