Lankan Rupee scored a brilliant first-up win, his fifth Group One victory. He was ridden quietly by Craig Newitt remaining behind his main rivals racing in third place. He switched out to challenge coming to the 200m and swept to the lead at the 100m. He then raced away to win brilliantly by almost three lengths in a fast 56.29. Three-year-old colt Brazen Beau travelled nicely just behind the leader (in the centre of the course) Deep Field, went past that horse nearing the 50m and fought on for a good first-up second, having no chance with the winner. The previously unbeaten Deep Field led and appeared to be travelling strongly but he had no answer to Lankan Rupee’s challenge at the 200m and fought on for a sound third at his first test in Group One company. Fab Fevola showed his brilliant early speed and went to Grandstand side, leading the field to 200m before finishing a (5 lengths) fifth, putting up a good effort in this class. Watermans Bay was well back in the six-horse field to the 100m and made up good late ground for (5.1 lengths) fifth in a promising effort whilst The Quarterback was never a chance finishing (ten lengths) last after being at the tail of the field all the way.
