Damien Oliver rode Amovatio quietly from his wide barrier (11) and he settled near last in the 15-horse field, following a good tempo. He was conceding the leader at least 12 lengths at the 800m before improving between runners rounding the home turn but was still about eighth as he got a split at the 200m. He then came with a late run to score a narrow win in the last few strides. Favourite Mr Utopia raced back with eighth place, wide with cover. He switched out on passing the 300m, challenged at the 100m and took a narrow lead in the closing stages before being grabbed on the post for the closest of seconds. Coronation Shallan was ridden hard in the early stages from her outside barrier (15) before racing outside the leader (Ventic). She got to the front at the 300m and fought back particularly well for a close-up third, putting up a good effort after working from her difficult barrier. Good Value raced in third place, challenged at the 300m and fought on nicely for fourth, beaten a length. Sir Andrew travelled well in seventh place, switched towards the rails at the 300m and got along the inner to take a narrow lead at the 100m before battling for a close up fifth, beaten just over a length.
