Leebaz bounced back after his disappointing 13th in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick on 9 April to score a good win here, his fourth at stakes level. He settled well in third place on the rails, behind a solid tempo (first 1200m 1:12.25). He got along the rails at the 200m and then went on to win well. The favourite Hauraki settled back in ninth place. He improved, from the 600m, challenged strongly at the 200m and fought well for a good second, in a strongly run race. Volkstok’n’barrell was back in tenth place, fanned deep on turning for home and then ran on well for a good third. The three-year-old Old North was seventh to the home turn and did well in battling on nicely for (2.7 lengths) fourth, just finishing in front of his stablemate It’s Somewhat, who was eighth to the home turn, before making late ground for (3.2 lengths) fifth.
