The Steven O'Dea-trained colt Sesar followed his second in a 2YO, C&G (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast on 14 April to score his first win in three starts, doing so at Group Three level here. He settled midfield on the rails in the 13-horse field, tracking a quick pace (first 600m 34.41), before responding to riding to improve along the inner on turning for home. He hit the front at the 200m and then fought back gamely to score quite impressively and in quick time (1:08.67). Chris Munce-trained gelding Boomsara, a winner of two of his prior three starts, raced in fifth place, improved nicely nearing the home turn, challenged strongly at the 200m and kept fighting well for a good second. Chris Waller-trained Lean Mean Machine, the $2.80 favourite, settled in second last place from his outside barrier (13), improved (wide out) on passing the 800m, put in a good run in the centre of the track from the 250m and kept finishing well to take third in a really smart performance.
