Advancing to 2400m at his third run this preparation, Primitivo staged a very good effort in taking this $1m race out in good style, under a skilful ride by Glen Boss. He settled really well, back in fifth place on the rails, tracking a solid tempo, before switching deeper to improve nearing the home turn. He got to the front at the 200m and then went to win decisively. Black On Gold settled back in tenth place, improved nicely behind runners rounding the home turn, took a split and went to fourth at the 200m and kept running on well to take second, his third such placing in succession. A Man To Match raced in sixth place, improved (deep) under riding at the home turn and then fought on well to take third. The favourite The Candy Man had a good trip in seventh place, on the rails, got into clear running on straightening and then battled on quite well under his top weight (61kg) for (2.7 lengths) sixth, stepping up to 2400m here.
