The Gerald Ryan-trained three-year-old Axanite did well to win here on debut, albeit narrowly. He was trapped deep from his outside barrier (9) in the early stages before easing to settle in seventh place, one off the rails. He moved up well wide rounding the home turn, got to third at the 150m and finished nicely to grab a nose win at the post, putting up a promising effort. The favourite Hawaiian Rose raced outside the leader, went to the front at the 100m but was caught nearing the post for a sound second at her first run since a debut third at this track in June.
