In a close finish where the first four horses finished within a length, the Chris Waller-trained gelding Cellarman scored at odds of $31. Having his third start this preparation, after racing in Queensland, he settled in seventh place on the rails, improved along the inner at the home turn, eased into clear running at the 200m and responded to riding to grab victory by a nose. The well-supported Tamarack raced back in sixth place, improved (under riding) nearing the home turn and then put in a solid run, in the centre of the track, which failed by the barest of margins to finish (nose) second. Taikolochi travelled outside the leader (Miss Redoble) at a good tempo, got to the front halfway down the straight and then held on well for a close-up third from Testashadow who was fourth to the home turn before fighting on to hold that position, beaten a half-length with Miss Redouble (1 length) fifth.
