Fiorente began quite well today and settled seventh between runners. He was under riding as the pace quickened at the 600m, fanned very wide rounding the home turn and then produced a great finishing burst to win by a long head, going away on the line. It was an impressive effort. Spacecraft led as usual but was ridden more patiently (first 1000m 1:01.86) before grabbing a clear lead passing the 700m. He then fought on gamely in the straight, only being headed in the last few strides for a good second. Lidari travelled well in seventh place on the rails to the 600m. He moved through well along the rails nearing the turn and got a clear inside run in the straight to challenge at the 100m. He then kept fighting on well for a close third, putting up a good run. Super Cool was smartly away before easing to get a good trip fifth one off the rails. He was hard ridden from the 700m as the pace increased and looked for a run in the centre on straightening. He got a clear run at the 100m and then kept battling on for a close fourth. Bass Strait was last on the rails in the ten-horse field most of the way to 600m. He was blocked on turning for home and then made good ground along the rails for a close-up fifth, being blocked again in the latter stages. It was a surprisingly good effort. Sangster travelled in third spot one off the rails most of the way. He moved up rounding the turn and held on very well in the straight for a good sixth, beaten just under two lengths. He should continue to improve and obviously will appreciate longer distances. *ANZ
