Hey Doc, winner of the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington in March took out his second Group One victory here in an incident packed race. After trouble in the barriers which resulted in the late scratching of multiple Group One winner Chautauqua, Hey Doc was smartly away from his wide barrier (eight) and after crossing to the lead (a move that later resulted in an unsuccessful protest) he then settled quite well in front before getting a break at the home turn. He then fought back gamely in the straight for a very good win. In Her Time led in the early stages from her inside barrier (one) but after some crowding settled in second place. She gained clear running at the home turn and then gradually made ground on the winner, getting to within a head for a very good second. She then protest unsuccessfully against the winner. Malaguerra settled at the tail of the field from his outside barrier (nine) before improving along the rails rounding the home turn. He continued along the rails, going to third at the 100m and then battled on really well to take the minor placing. Viddora raced in seventh place on the rails, was blocked at the home turn before running on quite well along the rails for (2 lengths) fourth. The favourite Vega Magic was a bit slow to move, settled outside the leader (Hey Doc) but was under pressure nearing the home turn before finishing (2.7 lengths) fifth, racing below his best form while English played up in the barriers, was passed fit to start but after racing in about sixth place, she dropped out to finish a distant last.
