Tally was one of the last away and found himself third last when they settled. Under Andrew Mallyon Tally found the fence with a circuit to run but had three behind him, then moved forward slightly down the back to be midfield. Away from the fence at the 800m he crept up in behind the leading group, ranged up three deep approaching the last corner and challenged for the lead soon after. He grabbed a narrow lead at the 100m then held on gamely to the line. Vengeur Masque took over the pace with a round to go and kept up a steady pace to the home turn. When challenged, inside the 200m, he fought back very well and only went under in the last few strides. Settler's Stone was well back (rails) down the side, got a nice split at the 200m and ran on well to grab third late from the favourite, The Gold Trail, who was handy throughout and looked a chance at the 200m, losing third on the line but broke down when past the post.
