The consistent General Peekay was eased early and settled tenth one off the rails, following a moderate pace (first 1000m 61.99). He improved wide with cover from the 600m only to be held up for a run on straightening. He got a split at the 200m and finished gamely to win narrowly but well. Goldbya was about eighth between runners and moved up nicely approaching the home turn. He put in a strong run to take a narrow lead at the 200m then battled on well for a close second. Electric Fusion was sixth on the rails but was shuffled back nearing the home turn. However, he got a nice split at the 200m and then battled for third, seeming to have every chance over the final stages. The favourite Essay Raider was well away and had a good run about fifth on the outer. He was held up between runners at the turn but commenced to tire from the 200m and finished a disappointing seventh, beaten three lengths. *ANZ
