The favourite Linton ($1.90) raced in tenth place one off the rails following a moderate pace (first 1000m 1:03.25). He improved three wide with cover from 700m, before moving up quickly (still wide) nearing the home turn. He took a narrow lead at the 200m and fought gamely to the post, winning narrowly but well in the sprint home. The lightly raced mare Lucky Penny, a winner of four of her past five races to date, raced outside the leader (Isopach) before taking a narrow lead on turning for home. She then battled back strongly in the straight being beaten only a long head at the post for a good second. The consistent three-year-old General Peekay was seventh on the rails to the 600m. He stuck to the inside at the turn and got a clear run from the 300m point to challenge at the 200m before battling on for a sound third, beaten a length and half. *ANZ
