The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Invader followed up his promising second in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at this track on 4 March to score impressively here at Group One level. He settled nicely in seventh place on the rails from his good barrier (3), angled deeper and into clear running on straightening, sprinted quickly from the 200m, hit the front at the 50m and went on to win impressively. The Group Onewinning New Zealand colt Summer Passage raced outside the leader (Sircconi) at a good tempo in the conditions (first 800m in 47.66), got the better of that runner at the 200m, looking the winner but he could not hold of the late-closing winner to take a good second after running a bold race at his Australian debut. Trapeze Artist settled nicely in fourth place, between runners, went to third at the 200m and kept battling on nicely to hold that position. The favourite Frolic settled well back in second last place in the 16-horse field, improved (deep) from the 700m, put in a run (wide out) at the 300m and steadily made ground for (5.1 lengths) seventh after facing a hard task from so far back in the field.
