Foreteller had a good trip in sixth place on the rails following a solid pace. He made ground from the 600m, progressing to a distant third at the 300m and continued to run on well to grab a surprise win by half length at the post. Fiveandahalfstar went straight to the lead and ran along at a strong pace. He dashed well clear on straightening and looked the winner but he drifted wide in the latter stages and was overtaken just before the post to be beaten a half length. It was a strong effort nevertheless. Maluckyday was last to the home turn and switched to the rails at the 300m and finished well, late for a good third looking on track for longer events over the carnival. Mawingo was ninth on the rails to the turn and kept running on fairly well for fourth. Silent Achiever was midfield to the turn but only finished on fairly well to finish fifth, after seeming to have every chance. The recent Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Sangster was near last to the turn and made some ground over the final stages to finish seventh while Manighar raced well below his best and dropped out to finish last. *ANZ
