Champollion improved on three previous starts for a surprise breakthrough win. He was near last in between runners to the 600m, being about eight lengths from the leaders at that stage. Once into the straight, he got a nice split at the 300m and darted through to win nicely by a short neck. Ideal Guide raced behind the leader (Aspen) before easing across heels at the 300m and took a narrow lead at the 100m only to the caught on the post. Rightoncue was second last in the 14-horse field to the 600m, switched out wide passing the 600m, then made up a lot of ground for a late-closing third. Gracious Prospect ran on from midfield for fourth, while Hydro was same most of the way and fought on for a sound fifth. *ANZ
