Former SA-trained mare Avoid Lightning, now with Les Bridge at Randwick, settled back in fifth place, one off the rails. She was giving the leader about five lengths as Tim Clark switched her wide shortly after straightening. She came with a well-timed run to hit the lead at the 150m and then fought back for a narrow but good win. The Peter Moody-trained Plucky Belle was a little slow to move and was last in the eight-horse field to the turn. She looked for a run in the centre at the 300m, got clear on passing the 250m and finished well on the inside, late, to miss narrowly in a photo. It was a good first-up effort and she looked unlucky not to have won. Aerobatics was sixth on the rails to the 600m, got a split to challenge at the 300m and then kept fighting on for third after having every chance. Recoinage was third on the rails, went to the inside on turning for home and put in a run to challenge at the 300m. She then battled on to take (one and a half lengths) fourth after seeming to have every opportunity. Single Style ($4 fav) travelled in third place, one off the rails, before moving up to challenge at the 300m but she did not maintain that effort and then battled on for fifth, beaten two and a half lengths. *ANZ
