Petrology was ridden patiently by Nick Hall being eased from his outside barrier (12) to settle in last place. He travelled well, improved wide with cover rounding the home turn, put in a quick sprint from the 300m and hit the lead at the 150m. He then raced away to score by two and a quarter lengths in a most impressive performance. The favourite Stratum Star had a perfect run from barrier two, racing in third place on the rails. He got a split and hit the lead at the 200m but then had no chance of matching the strongly closing winner, holding on for second. The outsider Berisha was back in ninth place, wide with cover, moved up wide out at the home turn and ran on surprisingly well to take third. Another outsider Ungrateful Ellen came from second last at the turn for a good fourth while the previously unbeaten Lord Aspen finished fifth after racing close to the pace three wide and then battled on in the straight after again racing a bit greenly in stages
