Royal Island raced back in tenth place, wide with cover, before fanning deep nearing the home turn. He then put in a good run, in the centre of the track, to challenge coming to the 100m and fought very well for a good second. Mirage showed good pace to settle outside the leader (stablemate, Stellar Collision) and challenged coming to the home turn. He got to the front on passing the 200m and then battled well to hold the minor placing. The favourite Girl Guide began well from her wide barrier (13) and settled in seventh place, wide with cover. But after putting in a brief (wide) bid coming to the home turn, she failed to run on in the straight in the Heavy10 conditions to finish (7 lengths) eighth.
