Godolphin’s Contributer followed up his impressive first-up win in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on 14 February to take out this Group One race in good style. He settled nicely in sixth place, one off the rails, moved up well nearing the home turn, hit the front at the 100m and then fought back gamely to score by a half-length. His stablemate, the British-bred imported stayer Hartnell was second last in the 15-horse field to the 600m. James Doyle saved ground steering him between runners rounding the home turn and then got a split at the 200m going to third on passing the 100m. He then battled gamely for a very good second, putting up an impressive effort at his first Australian start. He’s Your Man worked in the early stages from his outside barrier (15) before settling in fourth place. He challenged nearing the home turn and fought on particularly well for a very good third, only a long head away from the second-placed Hartnell. Silent Achiever was fifth on the rails, switched wider rounding the home turn and kept battling on soundly in the straight for (1.3 lengths) fourth, at her second run this preparation. The stayer Who Shot Thebarman surprised with a bold first-up run. He settled midfield, between runners, switched out on turning for home and fought on very well in the straight for (1.4 lengths) fifth. Lucia Valentina was beyond midfield (wide with cover) but was under riding nearing the home turn and made some ground, a bit one-paced, for (3.2 lengths) ninth.
