The Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Only went back from his wide barrier (13) and settled in 11th place in the 14-horse field, following a strong pace. He began a wide move on passing the 600m, was ninth (wide out) on straightening and then sprinted quickly to hit the front at the 100m before going on to score impressively. The John Moore-trained Helene Paragon also raced back in the field, settling in tenth place, improved (between runners) on straightening, finally got into fully clear running at the 200m and then ran on well for second, looking a little unlucky. His stablemate Joyful Trinity was ninth early on, one off the rails, improved to seventh at the home turn and continued a good run to be in a challenging position at the 100m. He then battled on well for a good third. The favourite Able Friend remained near the tail of the field, as usual, tracked the eventual winner from the 600m, went deep from the 400m and kept making ground, without looking a winning chance, to finish (2 lengths) sixth in a sound effort.
