Sires' Produce Stakes (G1)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

Recite maintained her unbeaten juvenile season with a clear-cut win in this final G1 for her age this season though the field was a very substandard one and clearly not befitting such a classification. The two best juveniles in New Zealand were not here (namely Ruud Awakening and Bounding), which marks the race down dramatically, as the former is going for the G1 Golden Slipper at Randwick and the latter spelling. Two of the just nine starters were maidens and one of them had never paid a dividend, while bar the winner Recite (3 wins before they jumped) the other six runners had won just a single race each. Ruud Awakening had demolished the runner up in this race Al Strada by over four lengths into third at Ellerslie in G1 and the runner up that day was Bounding, which was over two lengths behind. Two starts ago Recite had a ding donger with Bounding (having her first race left-handed) and beat it by a head at G2. Recite has only raced left-handed and is a filly that can lead and kick or be ridden quieter then surge, as she showed today, so the upside is there for all to see. She is only the third filly this century to win the juvenile G1 over 1400m left-handed behind Il Quello Veloce (2008) and Anabandana (2011). The winning time today of 1:23.25 is just the ninth best clocking this century and the last seven straight runnings have all posted quicker times. The fastest time is 1:22.42 by San Luis in 2001. Recite had posted what her trainer claimed as fast times and therefore relevant at her first two wins but Trentham down the chute clockings are totally unbelievable and have been for decades. Her 57.78 for 1000m and 1:09.42 for 1200m are in fact ordinary times as the track records for both chute sprints when it comes to juveniles prove with Heavenly View (56.48 in 1986 or eight lengths superior) and Kapsdan (1:07.24 in 2004 or a whopping fifteen lengths superior). Kapsdan never won another race and Heavenly View won once more (her next start) plus could only finish seventh in the 1987 G1 Manawatu Sires Produce (1400m). The 1200m record at Trentham for the older horses is 1:06.51 set in 1999 by Bawalaksana to display the disbelief that should always be shown in chute times at Trentham. Black Caviar is not shaking in her sturgeon roe boots! The G2 win of Recite by a head over Bounding in 1:09.82 is perhaps put best into perspective by Ruud Awakening clocking in the G1 Diamond Stakes of 1:08.78 (six lengths superior) and over two length defeat of Bounding. Al Strada is speedy and best left-handed but he was a distant second today and besides the fillies are so dominant this season it is not funny with the top trio of youngsters all being of the fairer sex. Kirramosa for a filly having just her second ever start today to dig deep the closing stages and finish fourth augurs well for next season. Charlestown made ground from last but took the short route (scraping paint up the fence) in the run home. Recite was simply superior to these but still is just the third best juvenile in New Zealand and by never having never run truly fast time or raced clockwise it is a justifiable position. She won a soft kill G1 race today that was G3 at best for what ran in the event and lacked serious stakes quality. The clash of the top three fillies this season a year older should make for compelling viewing as what goes on with it or comes back to the field will be interesting. Amazingly the three G1 races possible at a mile each season that a filly could contest are all left-handed and just the G1 Derby (2400m) is clockwise. Fillies also have the G1 Oaks (2400m) option and that is left-handed so a New Zealand racing season really does cater for the female galloper by a vast amount over the male.
