The Listed mile held on an Awapuni bog track was won by the 4yo mare Lady Le Fay after sitting a handy fourth throughout. She had to catch a clear leader at the 200m and even 100m out before gaining the upper hand with 20m to travel. It was her fifth win in twelve starts and being out of a Zabeel dam she has it all ahead including staying races. The winning time was 1:43.66 and many in the field simply could not cope with the Awapuni swamp and at the line there was twenty lengths between first and last. Lady Le Fay was winning her first blacktype race and for her trainers Kris and Paul Shailer it was their second ever win at Group or Listed level after several years of preparing thoroughbreds. The runner up was a brave Thorn Prince that only succumbed late to the mare that carried 6kg less. Thorn Prince went from the rear right through closer in across the top to challenge for the lead before turning for home. He swam clear the run home and looked sure to touch first only to out-stroked near the line. Taurus ran on down the outside for third while Irish Heartbeat fought on for fourth after being handy wide mostly. Miss Selby looked a next upper after coming from a clear last and widest out at the 300m. Waikaha after being handier than normal weakened in the heavy going while the leader Coastal Express was headed off before the home turn. Marotiri Miss was a flop as was Irion but anything that went around today can be forgiven as Awapuni can get deeper now and more quickly seemingly than it ever could before.
