The G1 2yo over 1400m saw a tight finish with less than one length separating the first four across the line and that included two fillies and two maiden males. Luna Rossa buried the field late after being under a hard ride ninth across the top to the home turn and going nowhere. She sustained her finish to win by a long neck in 1:29.13 and that was about thirteen and a half lengths inferior to the Listed Open Handicap time in the race following. Luna Rossa was winning her second race in five starts and gaining her first piece of blacktype plus she showed wet ground was no obstacle and needed every inch of the 1400m. The maiden male juveniles Sicario and Saracino ran ripper races and have scope galore. Saracino was the best effort in the race when a close third looking at the fact it was an all run on finish bar him. Karavali ran home stoutly for fourth having just won her maiden race prior. My Paisann was a sound fifth beaten just under two lengths having won his maiden prior too. Leading Role ran home rather well late down the outer from last. Wyndspelle was disappointing when a boxing away seventh beaten just under four lengths after racing handy considering prior he was a close second at G1. The wet tricky footing clearly played a role and also consider the G1 third finisher in his race prior in O’Rachael flopped today in finishing ninth beaten just over seven lengths. Gold Rush was a flop for a last start G2 winner but staggeringly was allowed to run missing a front plate so she warrants another chance. Smart ‘N’ Sassy was awful for a favourite in finishing last beaten nineteen lengths and she was getting urged across the top after sitting handy so despised the footing. Luna Rossa is a filly with closing power and scope but the placegettting maiden males have big upside namely Sicario and Saracino. Leading Role looks like he could run a mile now. The footing at Awapuni today was so bad that the entire meeting gets an asterisk with the margins some got beaten clearly indicators of nothing except they cannot bog snorkel or swim.
