Lj Hooker Manawatu Breeders (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

This G3 2000m for fillies and mares at WFA drew a far from strong line up and saw and on pacer dominated finish. The first four home were in order on settling down and turning for home the trailer, the leader, fourth the outer and fifth the inner so it was a total on pace finish. China Star from reversed on her prior outing when well beaten to after trailing the leaders and getting off the fence near the home turn she took the lead turning in and never got headed. The 7yo mare hung on to win by a head in 2:02.12 and record her sixth win in forty-four starts. Today was her twelfth start in blacktype races and her first win to go with just a single placing that came at Listed level and here on this track. She had last won a race way back in December 2015 and it came here on her home track. All In Vogue ran a game second and never went around a rival until having to be angled out with 150m to go. Royal Ruby led up by a clear margin and then once headed turning for home fought ever so hard and in a tight close finish and only second spot on the post. The three-win mare had never attempted a blacktype race before and under the WFA scale was poorly in today but she almost pulled it off. Missy Moo fought well from a good sit fourth the outer with cover and was only beaten half a length. Slimline ran a game fifth at was her first look at 2000m and she was well back the inner then got off the inside across the top. She came up wide and seventh turning for home and kept coming to be beaten just over two lengths. Makamojito ran a game sixth as this one-win mare was badly off in this at WFA and was wide for almost the first half of the race but she kept boxing on the run home. Porcelain Princess the favourite sat outside the lead and while she battled on her usual ping and kick were not in evidence today at what was a first blacktype attempt. Rosetta was just a fair eighth and plugged to be beaten just under five and a half lengths. The rest were beaten seven lengths or more and up to almost thirty-three lengths. The second and third favourites Calligraphy and Donizetti were very poor in finishing ninth and twelfth respectively. This was nowhere near a G3 standard race and contained a lot of out of form mares and several that had not won in quite a while.
