James Bull Rangitikei Gold Cup (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

The track was an utter bog for this Listed 1550m Open Handicap that drew a disappointing nine runners with several out of form. She's Poppy fresh up relished the atrocious footing and after sitting back and wide came down the outside fence to score by three-quarters of a length and clock 1:41.43. The time looks a tad skeptical as the race before this, a Ratings75 Benchmark (three or more classes at least inferior to Listed grade) suspiciously was afforded the exact same clocking. Detentore is unbeaten and may have scope but to post the identical time is a tad dubious and besides the runner up in that race Viktor Vegas was a certainty beaten after a slow start. She's Poppy, a rising 7yo mare, was today winning her seventh race from twenty-five outings and gaining her first piece of blacktype. The 1550m today was the shortest trip she has won at and 2100m at this stage is the longest distance she has scored over but that could change this Winter. Ringo, the clear topweight that had not won a race for a very long time (October 2016), shared the pace on the outer and looked set to break his drought but the rising 9yo was caught with 25m to go. Ruby Armani trailed and tried hard when third beaten a length and that 3kg rise for her last start Listed win here proved the key combined with the awful footing presented. Third Time Lucky, fresh up like the winner, missed away but ran home gamely for fourth beaten just over a length and the rising 7yo mare may well have won but for giving away more at the start than she was defeated by. William Wallace, the favourite, was a tad disappointing when fifth beaten two and a half lengths but he was asked to carry 58kg and that looked an incredible weight for his record. He has won five of fifteen starts so his strike rate is nothing to write home about and never been blacktype placed yet had clear second topweight. Platinum Command was a distant sixth and the rising 7yo mare has not won since last September. Saffron Lady, a three-win mare, was outclassed after rising here on her last start three or more grades so was having a hail mary in a weak field and it did not work. Slimline has not won this year yet and the rising 7yo mare does not like footing this deep and boggy, so no surprise then she was down to a walk the run home when beaten sixteen lengths. Sasanof's Hero was outclassed at his first blacktype attempt and incredibly was weighted the fourth highest runner at 55.5kg, which is staggering in itself. He does not really handle slow or heavy footing (nine starts for four placings) and after leading stopped badly to finish last beaten eighteen lengths. This was a poor field and some runners started despite not being able to cope on bog footing. There will be some winners out of this if better weighted or race situated but in effect this was as weak a Listed Open Handicap as you will see and invited several runners to have a throw at the blacktype stumps that had no show in reality.
