This G3 under WFA for fillies and mares only over 2000m saw the Australian bred Fiscal Fantasy come with a sustained surge on an awful chopping out Dead5 presented Awapuni track that runners were going wider and wider on. Only one leader won all day and it was a co-leader and five-off the inside, while some winners came as far out as thirteen-wide turning in, so the footing was substandard and unacceptably biased. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were fourth (six-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (four-off the inside and two lengths clear), sixth (seven-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), sixth (ten-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), co-leader (five-off the inside), ninth (thirteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and fourth (eight-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader). Fiscal Fantasy settled down fourth last then improved deep before the home turn and straightened up the third widest runner (thirteen-off the inside) and ninth unleashing. The 4yo mare that started fourth favourite surged in the very tricky footing to reach fourth at the 200m then sustained that momentum to get the front 10m from the line and scored by a neck in 2:04.43. It was her fourth in eighteen starts and her first Blacktype win (she had tried three times at G2 and G3 as a 3yo filly to no avail) as she snared the G3 today. All her wins have come on Dead footing from 1600m to 2100m. Monrecur at $23 settled well back too and went wide across the top but improved through the field near the home turn to be sixth turning in. She reached third at the 200m and second at the 100m then led at the 25m only to be bombed the final 10m by the winner. Lubaya at $24 settled down in the rear duo and was still back thirteenth turning for home but she drove through to be sixth at the 200m and fourth at the 100m then got third on the post. The favourite Jessie Gee was a game fourth after being back and wide then moving up fourth wide midrace and third wide across the top. She took the lead turning for home and looked set for victory only to be caught the final 25m and to add insult to injury she lost the G3 third placing right on the line. Artiste was also a game effort for fifth as she was fifth, sixth or seventh and wide in the running at times then moved up third turning for home, She got to second at the 200m before being run over late and was beaten just two lengths. Pasabahce was not too bad for sixth after being midfield surrounded then losing her place across the top, Lady Painton raced fourth or fifth mostly and was seventh at the 200m battling away, as she did to the line to be beaten four lengths. Shared Secrets battled on after racing sixth the inner then tenth turning for home. Sinarahma was midfield and wide and battled on while Fictitious raced second the outer and led before the home turn before being run over and weakening. Lady Shabeel plugged on late from well back and wide, while Sunburst settled buried back the inner and never got into the race. Hinerangi was weak after trailing the leaders on the inner and Zentessa got back and wide and never raised any hopes. Trisha Lea was wide then led before being headed at the 450m and stopped badly. Tantalising settled third last and then dropped right out across the top and was last home beaten over ninety-five lengths. She was found to have suffered cardiac arrhythmia. This was not really a G3 depth field and more a Listed grade contest and outcome. There will be a good dollop of future winners from the race for many of the mares back to their proper classes and there is always scope in female gallopers for New Zealand racing as so many race options and advantages come their way. Some in this field are not middle distance types and are better sticking to the sprinter-miler category but also this was a rain-affected track result so gets that asterisk of doubt.
