This Listed Open Handicap over 2200m was run at a solid clip and saw the favourite Toms bury them the concluding stages. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (one-off the inside and a length in front), third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a length in front), led (one-off the inside and two lengths in front), fifth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fifth (seven-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), seventh (eight-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and ninth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). Toms was third up today at a distance that suited the 6yo gelding and after racing ninth the outer was wide across the top and came up deeper turning for home. He surged from seventh turning in to be fifth at the 200m and second at the 150m winding up before leading with 50m to go. He scored by over a length such was his momentum near the line and clocked a strong time of 2:15.57 to record his sixth win in twenty-five starts. Today was his first eve try at Blacktype and to show the lack of stamina depth in Open Class, it was his first go at this grade too plus he started favourite and won. He has now had five runs at 2200m for four wins and a third. Duplicity in a first show of form this campaign ran second and came with a strong finish from well back and widest turning for home. The 7yo was fifth up today and still ninth with 100m to go but unleashed a very big finish indeed. Balham, a 9yo and the stablemate of the winner, raced midfield the outer and was wide across the top before coming up deeper turning for home. He surged and led at the 150m but could not repel his younger yardmate the closing stages. Hi I'm Nikita ran another consistently good race for fourth after racing handy the inner and has now gone eight races in a row and finished no worse than fourth. Korakonui caught the eye running on strongly late for fifth after being back and turning for home tenth and the second widest runner out. My Gift was wide working then went up second the outer before losing his place to be fifth across the top and he whacked away okay all things considered. Strolling Vagabond raced second the outer then fifth the outer before moving up third wide across the top and he fought well considering he made an early move, The rest were clumped together beaten four and a half lengths to less than seven lengths over the line and none were disgraced but nothing made much ground or those that wilted did not drop out. The bunched finish makes this a dubious finish plus the winner was able to win at his first try at Blacktype and at Open Class and the fact he ran favourite says it all. The depth is non-existent in the staying ranks and Open Class races are now very weak and mostly fully of either old horses still going around or runners nowhere near Open Class but having a throw at the stumps anyway. There is no more fear of Open Class middle distance or staying fields as the depth scares nobody. There is a much the same muchness feel about the runners as not too many lengths separate them so in truth they are as a bunch all not that good and more middle of the road types.
