Valachi Downs Royal Stakes (G2)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This G2 3yo filly only at 2000m lacked all of the G1 fillies from the Spring mile feature of the 1000 Guineas bar two runners and contained four maidens so lacked depth for sure. The quinella was formed by the two fillies that ran fourth and fifth in that G1 mile over November and the winner today was in fact a last start maiden winner that made the step up to G2 seem like it was not a very big leap. The track at Ellerslie today was posted as a Good3 but the winners in the main came well off the inside and many got angled deliberately up the middle lanes, which looks and is quite unnerving for bettors. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were seventh (three-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), seventh (two-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), led (one-off the fence and a length in front), tenth (four-off the fence and four lengths from the leader), fifth (four-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), ninth (six-off the fence and five lengths from the leader), sixth (nine-off the fence and three lengths from then leader), led (four-off the fence and a neck in front), sixth (eight-off the fence and two lengths from the leader) and led (two-off fence and two lengths in the lead). Imelda Mary ran fifth in the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton in November and came into this 100K event as a last start midweek maiden winner in a 10K race on her home track. She raced fifth the inner in a pressure-free race and once angled away from the inside, like all winners did today on a stipes posted Good3 track so the action of the riders tells the real story, then surged though and led at the 200m. Imelda Mary went clear and scored in the end by over a length and a quarter in a very slow 2:08.30 to record her second win from thirteen starts and her first at Blacktype level. The transition from midweek maiden to G2 easy winner against her own age and sex is way too easy in New Zealand at the moment and a gap that should be cavernous is now Tupperware-thin sadly and shows the depth is not around in a once bulwark area of New Zealand breeding and racing. Secret Allure finished fourth in the G1 1000 Guineas and beat home Imelda Mary that day by over a length and a half but today was second beaten by almost that margin for a three length turnaround in effect. This visiting Central Districts filly had run last when resuming at G3 over 1550m mid-December so came into this with a query if she had come up for sure. She raced sixth the outer and came up deep turning in then reached second at the 200m and chased in vain. Luminous, a maiden, started third favourite (one dollar only away from being favourite) and that screamed the lack of depth in this race more than anything else. The white filly has placed in both her maiden midweek outings and to be so well backed rising to G2 so up in grade greatly and over more ground was staggering in itself. She ran on well from eighth the outer and came up deep turning for home with her sustained finish to get a valuable G2 placing on her dance card. House Of Carter ran favourite having a week ago here run a close second at G2 over the mile on a turgid Ellerslie bog that sapped the life out of so many runners, which showed the track does not drain that well and it took more out of runners than many people would admit but now know. She raced third the outer and was fourth across the top before not pinging the run home and almost one-batting to finish fourth beaten almost three lengths. Clementina a maiden than had not paid a dividend on raceday ran a good fifth and was a nostril behind House Of Cartier and it is mind-boggling she could be this competitive. This is the stamina filly and the one that everyone has now seen as making big progression over Summer and into the Autumn. Pinmedown won the G2 filly mile here a week ago on a bog and settled back as usual before running on well from eleventh turning for home to finish sixth. She was beaten almost three and a half lengths though and did not surge like last week so is either a wet tracker or was jaded by that quagmire. The filly found the line but more in a sustained manner so that turn of foot did not reappear plus this being a slow run race she found it harder to pick them up and drop them. Elate ran an honest seventh and came though from the back closer in than recommended on the day to add merit too her effort. Melarita a maiden, weakened after sitting outside the leader (another maiden that stopped to run last) in a tepid run race. The rest were outclassed or need wetter ground or could not stay. This was another poor G2 3yo race on the card for depth and run at a pressure-free rate crawl so proved almost nothing if in fact anything at all. The quinella at G2 from Ellerslie at the mile seven days on a dreadful bog, where the track never drained properly and the amount of runners that walked home exhausted was staggering, both missed paying a dividend today incredibly. The 3yo depth this season is very dubious and once again nothing can hold their form therefore the standout factor cannot yet be applied even though halfway through the season.
