Pencarrow City Of Auckland Cup (G3)

WT: 53.5kg Type: OPEN

This G3 2400m Open Handicap drew a small and weak field that had several old horses and some wet trackers still going around. The winner, an Australian bred, Prince Jabeel was the lowest winning runner (he was just a two-race winner prior to this) and bolted in after sitting outside the leader. In his prior start ran he third in a Benchmark 72 so this was a rise of four or five grades and of course it was his first ever Blacktype race attempt. The track at Ellerslie today was posted as a Good3 but the winners in the main came well off the inside and many got angled deliberately up the middle lanes, which looks and is quite unnerving for bettors. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were seventh (three-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), seventh (two-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), led (one-off the fence and a length in front), tenth (four-off the fence and four lengths from the leader), fifth (four-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), ninth (six-off the fence and five lengths from the leader), sixth (nine-off the fence and three lengths from then leader), led (four-off the fence and a neck in front), sixth (eight-off the fence and two lengths from the leader) and led (two-off fence and two lengths in the lead). Prince Jabeel outstayed his rivals carrying the minimum of 53.5kg to win by almost two lengths in 2:29.24 and win his third race from twenty starts and the late maturer had only won his maiden over 1800m at midweek Taupo last September. Peso set the pace and was headed turning for home by the eventual winner and was third at the 300m and 150m seemingly certain to fill that berth but fought on and regained second at the 50m. The odds on Mongolian Marshall had a good run sixth the outer and moved up an ominous third turning in and reached second at the 300m looking the winner. The fact he could not pull back the winner and then wilted to not even hold second the final 50m puts a stamina asterisk on him as he finished what can only be described as a weak third. Roger That, a wet tracker that was rising three to four grades in this on his last start trailed third the inner and fought on for fourth beaten just over two lengths. His win prior saw the third finisher be Prince Jabeel that got 4.5kg from him but today they ran at the same minimum weight of 53.5kg just to put another head scratcher on the awful field depth. Five To Midnight fought on okay for fifth under clear topweight of 59kg (he had 3.5kg more than the number two saddlecloth Mongolian Marshall) after getting back further than normal. Excalibur was a grinding away and one-batting type sixth beaten just under three lengths after racing fourth almost throughout. Blue Breeze was also a one-batting seventh beaten just over three lengths while Terra Sancta was a disappointing eighth beaten over four and a half lengths. Rock On was a poor ninth and Kyrie Eleison since a G3 fourth (Mongolian Marshall ran second in this race) three runs ago has got worse and worse. Andoyas ran an inglorious last and never raised any hopes after settling down in the rear duo the inner. He needs more cushion or cut in the ground it does seem. This was a very weak G3 2400m field and the way the least winning runner in the field Prince Jabeel outstayed this lot showed the New Zealand stayer is almost a thing of the past and very hard to find anymore. Stamina is as rare as hen's teeth or a dodo bird to find in the New Zealand bred at the moment and has been an alarming trend for the last decade at least. This result and field that ran is further proof with an Australian bred late maturer absolutely pumping the opposition today.
