Sunline Vase (G3)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This G3 3yo filly 2100m saw Pinmedown win impressively and signal that she can overcome adversity too after she was badly held up near the home turn going from seventh back to twelfth. She unleashed and reached fifth at the 200m then led at the 100m and went on to score by just under a length in 2:12.12. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were fifth (five-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), eighth (two-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (length ahead and four-off the inside), third (five-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), twelfth (four-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fifth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fourth (two-off the inside and a length from the leader) and led (one-off the fence and a neck in front). Pinmedown today was winning her third race from seven starts and now she has a G3 win to add too her G2 win that came here too on Boxing Day. Clementina, the best maiden in New Zealand, ran on strongly for second after settling down midfield the outer. She appreciated the rise in distance and has placed twice in six starts and they have come at Listed level and now G3. Savy Yong Blonk settled back on the outer but came with a good sustained finish to get third on the post and is flourishing as the distances rise. Oratia was trapped wide for a while then went up second the outer and fought on gamely to be beaten just over a length. Stilton ran on well from a long way back on the inner while The Real Beel after racing fifth the inner got off and was sent up fast wide to lead turning for home. She looked the winner still at the 200m then when headed at the 100m got swamped the final 50m, so may have been detonated too soon. Kinshasa ran on okay from the rear while Rubira was held up at the 150m when boxing on so had a partial excuse. Pullypoursocksup took off wide before the home turn after racing sixth the outer and came up second and six-off the inside before wilting and like The Real Beel may have been let rip too soon. Spring Delight was barely a pass mark while Sunny Rose was a tad disappointing and the leader Misha's Star at $84 gave a sight but was run over quickly once headed turning for home though she did not stop and drop out. The next two were outclassed and the last finisher Elate that ran fourth favourite was wide working before going then up second then was fourth across the top but dropped out dramatically the run home. She was beaten over twenty-nine lengths and found to have suffered cardiac arrhythmia. This field lacked depth and a maiden ran second to emphasise that but the winner Pinmedown is the real deal and she can handle wet ground too so has options galore covered. Her one armour chink is manmade track bias being a backrunner. Matamata and Cambridge stables seem to have a strangle-hold on the G1 NZ Oaks at this stage bar a Hastings prepared front runner stealing it.
