This Listed juvenile mile drew a modest lot and of the only nine runners seven were maidens with the winner being the Australian bred Quick Thinker. Alarmingly for local breeders of the three Blacktype races held at Ellerslie today two were won by Australian breds (notably this 2yo mile and the 3yo 2100m) and the G2 Open Handicap mile was won by an Irish bred. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were co-leader (one-off the inside), led (three-off the inside and two lengths ahead), co-leader (three-off the inside), second (three-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (two-off the inside and a neck ahead), tenth (ten-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), seventh (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and a length ahead). So of the eight races today five leaders won and one winner turned for home a close second so manmade track bias was most definitely in play as some of the times were fast and some slow therefore a sprint home only cannot be put up as an excuse. Quick Thinker at his second start was being backed up eight days later and rising 370m and obviously in class but won after sitting outside the leader. The colt took the lead at the 200m and kept kicking on best to win by just under a length in 1:37.44. Ranger, a once placed in three starts maiden, led up and when headed did not give it in and fought well to the line. Rendition, a maiden filly, was the run of the race after being crowded at the start and being last away as she ran home strongly for third beaten just over a length and may well have won this with an unimpeded getaway. Checkers trailed the leaders and got blocked for an inside run at the 150m and had to come out and go around so it cost him third as just a neck away from that finishing position at the line. All The Rage fought on well to the line for fifth beaten a length and three-quarters while noticed running on was Sherwood Forest from the rear duo. Shakespeare was only fair while Glenda Goodwitch the clear favourite disappointed after settling back and was beaten five lengths. She may be a left-hander only at this stage. In Fashion was a poor last beaten six lengths, as she was one of two race winners in the field. The winner Quick Thinker has stamina upside and may be a VRC Derby (2500m) type for next Spring in Melbourne at Flemington. Many of this field should on breeding need a mile or middle distance to be at their peak performance range but as to how strong overall this race was is a tad dubious.
