Piazza D'Oro Futurity Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 2yo over 1400m under set weights saw a major form reversal winner at $30 win in the Australian bred Rhaegar that had been ninth beaten almost twenty-two lengths in his prior start. The gelding raced sixth the inner then fifth in a gap before getting ominously close to the leaders turning for home and then surging through. He was second at the 200m and led at the 100m then just held on to beat a stablemate in Long Jack, also an Australian bred. The track today at Ellerslie was supposedly a Dead4 but raced slower than that with the Rail out 4m and some very tired horses walked home all day. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were sixth (seven-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), third (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), seventh (seven-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), sixth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fourth (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), second (three off the inside and half a length from the leader) and tenth (eleven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). No leader won all day surprisingly as many of the fields lacked numbers and the footing was holding and suspect plus only two favourites won all day and one of those came in the first race, with first use of the track and was just a six-horse field. Bettors copped a bruising as form reversals and head scratching winners kept appearing with half the card winning at double figures from $14 up to $30 and another race the winner paid just shy at $9.70. The footing in presented clearly had the biggest effect on the results all day. Rhaegar was having a first race clockwise and after disappointing greatly in two left-handed flops came out at Listed level to score in 1:24.33, the best time of the day notably at 1400m. It was his first dividend paying effort of his career so far and just happened to be a win at Listed level. Long Jack the stablemate should have won and but for being let drift too far back on settling would have for sure. He was still fourth last across the top and then was sent up fifth turning for home and angled the deepest runner. His sustained surge only fell short of victory by a long head. Jennifer Eccles ran a game third and she was likely cost the race near the home turn when pushed out very wide and having to move earlier than her rider surely wanted to push the button. The filly raced fourth the outer in a winning spot but the trailer pushed out three-wide at the 600m and shoved her deeper at this point so she was let loose and moved up to lead turning for home' A sitting duck thereafter she was headed at the 100m but fought hard and was only beaten long head and a long neck. The runner that shoved out from the trail ended up running seventh beaten five lengths it needs to be reported, as it proven all in vain. Avadane the favourite also was let settle too far back in seventh spot but ran on well for fourth after being the second widest runner turning for home. Showbeel ran on okay from tenth on settling and is an improver plus she is from the same yard ads the first and second finishers. All The Rage after sitting second the outer wilted the run home and Sherwood Forest disappointed again. Selenelion battled away for eighth and she is also a stablemate of the first two home. Happiness Forever never got into the race after settling back second last and Custom Cruiser was ditto and is yet another stablemate of the top two home. Custom Cruiser is forgivable as he was away awkwardly and last at the jump then got hampered. Quiz Kid was away awkwardly too but went through the field early to settle fifth the outer and was sixth across the top but stopped badly the run home. King Midas was wide then sped to the lead and set a strong pace as the overall time showed and paid for it as once headed turning for home stopped badly. These sort of late season juvenile races at more than six furlongs always provide an preview into some miler and middle distance types for next season and despite an awful track this could be a worthwhile looking glass into next season. The fact that the leading stable of Murray baker and Andrew Forsman had five of the runners and formed the quinella tells you the type of youngsters they buy and prepare for owners where good things come to those that can wait. It also helps if owners can afford to wait and the success of the yard has earned that right to have vast numbers that improve all percentages and strike rates as they find more middle distance types and stamina sorts than any other stable in New Zealand, so their formula works. The stable quinella was Australian bred tellingly and this is now a common occurrence in NZ gallops Blacktype results at all levels and ages and sex. Long Jack looks a deadest Derby type for sure. The fillies Jennifer Eccles, Avadane and Showbeel performed with kudos and are all bred to be G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) runners in the Spring.
