This Listed juvenile event open to Karakas Sales graduates only saw the Australian bred On The Bubbles score a convincing win from a wide gate. The gelding met a suspect field overall for depth and one bereft of stars but was well backed into $2.90 and would score by a length and three-quarters in 1:10.70. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fourth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a length clear), tenth (seven-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), third (one-off the inside and a length from the leader) and ninth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). On The Bubbles was back and wide initially then his rider took a gamble and sent him up fast deep and actually got in and over to fourth the outer after 400m and that was the winning of the race. He sat there then came up wide turning for home before surging to the lead at the 250m and then proving superior at the line. The gelding is now three-from-three and the win today was obviously his first at Blacktype and his biggest success. His two wins prior have not stood up form wise since but this is juvenile racing and so many variables are in play in this baby raffle. Second home was the stablemate and also an Australian bred in Sneaky Shark that was sent forward earlier than the winner and went up second the outer and he fought on well the run home. It was his first Blacktype placing and career best effort by the colt but it does put the race into proper perspective being a one placing maiden prior to today. Third home and also from the same yard was Avonardo that was wide early before speeding to the lead and he gave a sight until being headed at the 200m. His form prior to today was all South Island so he ran above himself in this event. Fourth home and also from the same stable as the first three home too was Sophisticardo that after an awkward start raced back and wide then came up fourth turning for home. The male, like the three ahead of him, fought well to be beaten just over three lengths Fifth home was the first filly, the Central Districts visitor Brazen Beau at $41, with the Australian bred settling back then improving eighth turning in before reaching fifth in a gap at the 200m. Sixth home was Western Springs that settled in the rear trio the inner and ran on well though he was beaten almost six and a half lengths. Callissident, an Australian bred filly, ran on the fence after being fifth the inner early then she lost her spot to be ninth turning for home. Millefiori, the stablemate of the first four home, let the show down when a no-dash eighth beaten almost eight lengths after racing sixth the outer on settling. The rest were beaten over eight lengths and as far as over twenty lengths with several of them underperforming and cracking under pressure. This was a suspect field overall for a million dollar event and many of the runners involved were not rated top shelf by their yards at all so whether this Listed event counts for much or will stand up next season and beyond is both doubtful plus partially unknown.
