This G2 event for 3yo colts and geldings over 1400m was run at solid clip throughout and saw the leader Amarula run them ragged to win convincingly and clock 1:22.01. He has been up for a lot longer than many of his rivals and was winning his fourth race from eight outings today and his first at stakes level. Amarula was fourth here three runs ago behind Serious Satire, which won the G3 3yo filly event earlier superbly earlier in the card just to show that her form stacks up deluxe. Scrutinize stomped home down the outer from well back for second and he looks to be G1 Guineas player this Spring plus a possible G1 NZ Derby type. He is out of the good racemare Legs that won at G1 this very meeting in the third leg of Triple Crown over 2040m as a 4yo mare in 2006 having won the G1 NZ Oaks (2400m) the previous autumn as a 3yo filly. Battle Time is still a maiden but keeps running slashing races and is now after today G1, G2 and Listed placed. Marky Mark ran on attractively late for fourth and is peaking nicely though it appears he may be going to Melbourne for some Spring carnival age group races where the stakemoney and prestige is higher. Two runners caught the eye and have scope namely Five To Midnight that got home well after a tardy start and ditto for Thunder Down Under, which is amazingly still a maiden. Rocanto can be forgiven as he did not like being between runners it seemed while the bigger flop in Selfie was trapped out four-wide at some stages but showed little despite an overlander in the run home. Selfie is better than that and his next outing will be pivotal regarding the path he takes as might be a sit then pounce sprinter only. Rule The World was wide near the lead throughout and is a winner in waiting back in grade.
