This Prestige Hurdle (3100m) saw a local in No Change get the thick end of the stake and score comfortably after trailing the leaders on the inner. The track at Hastings was slow and the rail out 7m and raced very biased all day towards on pacers. The winners and where they turned for home each race in order were second (on the fence and half a length from the leader), third (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), led (four-off the inside by a neck), led (eight-off the inside by five lengths), led (twelve-off the inside by three lengths), led (three-off the inside by a length), second (one-off the inside and a length from the leader) and second (one-off the inside and half a length from the leader). No Chance is a rising 11yo gelding and jumped cleanly third the inner mostly before working off just before the home turn then took the lead at the 200m and won by two lengths in 3:36.32. It was his eleventh win in sixty-six starts and as a hurdler his fourth success plus today was his first Prestige win after having three runs at this level for a second, a fourth and a fifth. Woodsman started favourite and set the pace on a track presented that favoured this pattern of racing by a staggeringly biased amount the rising 8yo gelding fought well once headed at the 200m. In the ten race card four leaders won, three came from sitting second, two sat third and the other came from fifth in a seven-horse field and was only two and a half lengths form the leader (the farthest margin any winner all day came from) turning for home. Laekeeper fresh up ran a good third after racing midfield the inner then getting off the fence and moving up to challenge for the lead. He was second turning for home then third at the 200m and ended up three and a half lengths behind the runner up. Ooee, the stablemate of the winner, moved up second the outer then was third down the backstraight and fourth across the top to the home turn and ended up over ten lengths from the victor. Lucky Tonight the rank outsider at $58 ran a reasonable fifth and was in a clump over the line that included the second favourite Tommyra and four others all beaten just under thirteen lengths and a tad below fifteen lengths. Letmeby was a length behind that cluster and Guy Fox was the only other runner to finish with Raaj brought down just over the second to last fence while Hesalljazz fell two fences out and Wilijonmcbride was pulled up before the final fence. The blatant track bias made the results all day tainted with doubt for sure and many of those competing want heavy and bottomless footing to keep up let alone overtake anything. Woodsman and Laekeeper still have several seasons of leaping ahead and both can swim if need be too.
