This winner of this Premier Wellington Steeplechase (5500m) was Yadarm that has been a revelation of late for the potent Kevin Myers yard and the 12yo scored by a nose today in 7:21.50. He raced fourth mostly then was into third at the 1000m before moving into second across the top the he only got in the bob that matters on the line. This Premier Steeplechase and the Premier Hurdle were held at Hastings on a Slow8 track after Trentham proved to be bottomless and unraceable. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fourth (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), second (seven-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), co-leader (one-off the inside), third (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), second (eight-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (four-off the fence and half a length in front), third (on the fence and length and a half from the leader), sixth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (five-off the inside and half a length from the leader) and led (three-off the inside and half a length in front). Yardarm has won three races in total with all of them have been as a Steeplechaser and after being two years away from the track he returned for a new yard. He looked to be a surefire retirement after four poor runs over the fences then suddenly has won at Premier level in both his last two outings in what is the turnaround of this season so far. The one thing that has helped him has been the distance rises of late. Second home was Shackleton's Edge that has also been a find as a Steeplechaser having won his maiden two runs ago by daylight and then today going down a nostril at Premier level. The 8yo gelding is part of the proven jumping yard of Paul Nelson and Corinna McDougall and they have another discovery here. He raced third on his own then went up second before leading at the 1000m and went down on the line by the narrowest margin. Third home was Shamal but he was beaten over thirty-three lengths having raced fifth then he went up second down the backstraight the last time before weakening out across the top. No other runners finished the race with the biggest surprise being Mezmerize, the second favourite, that lost the rider at the first fence.
