Matamata Breeders Stakes (G2)

Age: 2yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This race and result could be a catalyst for judicial change after what seemed a straight forward relegation of the winner to second and the runner up promoted to first after all the facts and rules pointed to such. The fact the winner held the race after scoring by a nose, the barest margin of victory you can find in thoroughbred horse racing worldwide, has put all the attention onto matters that are or should be irrelevant when such decisions are made. If you deal in facts alone Serena Miss caused crowding (interference) to the runner up Nahema the final 50m and with the margin being a nose then positions had to change. The no change in placings was determined by the JCA panel comprising of Adrian Dooley and Richard Seabrook. Head steward of the four person panel on the day was John Oatham and he has said on the record to media and in the room to the effect that it is the view of the stipes (he, A Coles, M Williamson and P Kinsey) that interference did take place the final 50m and it was caused by Serena Miss and the victim was Nahema. You cannot get it any clearer than that and it is officially on the written record in the stewards report as ‘SERENA MISS shifted inwards under pressure crowding NAHEMA on to STRATA LADY (C Grylls) inside the final 50 metres. Serena Miss it will show officially held the race and is a big tank of filly that may end up being just a sprinter or a sprinter-miler with such a colossal frame. She was away ordinarily and had to work between runners to improve but once drawn out into clear air the run home let rip impressively. The fact she ran in markedly many widths was an issue and also the fact she had a long neck at least over the runner up inside the final 50m and ended up winning by just a nose is also a concern. The winning time of 1:09.72 was three lengths faster than the male only juvenile event earlier in the card. Nahema was super and should have been awarded the race purely on the fact she was beaten the smallest amount possible and copped some crowding caused by the winner the final 50m. She is not that big though most fillies look little when Serena Miss moves alongside them and has a big future with these colours being in super form for the last couple of seasons. The daughter of Per Incanto has upside as does the winner by another in form sire in Ifraaj. Strata Lady set the solid clip and fought well for third on her home track and the daughter of Stratum has scope too. It was amazing that on this day, tinged with sadness, not one locally trained runner saluted. Reminisce pounded home late once drawn out into clear air inside the closing 200m and is itching for 1400m or further. Untamed Diamond was okay after doing work early and Fame Seeker was sound and should win a race this season. She Is Stryking got home okay late as usual and also should win a race before the end of the season. Forgive the run of Special Memories as never on the track. All in all the first four have scope and in particular the first pair home with the controversy over-shadowing just how well each performed. It is very rare that this juvenile filly only race does not turn out to be a blacktype bellwether and no reason to think otherwise. This G2 race may in fact become more noteworthy if it instigates a change in judicial decision making whereby the stewards panel alone determines the outcome. This race being fillies only is critical as the broodmare/foal worth can be ten times more for a win versus a placing. The rematch of the fillies (and the enquiry room combatants too for that matter) could be must see television as it almost certain they will cross paths and carpet again!
